Florida Bird Photography Locations
Dunedin Causeway
City: Clearwater / Dunedin
GPS: N28 03.058 W82 47.535
The Dunedin Causeway connects the mainland to the island that is mostly Honey Moon Island State Park. This can be an ideal spot to find various shorebirds, in particular Black Skimmers. This is either a morning or afternoon location. Many choose to photograph here in the early mornings while waiting for the State Park to open. Do not restrict yourself to the small areas before the drawbridge. The pull offs on the park side of the drawbridge can be productive too. It should be noted this area becomes busy at times with windsurfers and jet skis.
The whole St. Joseph Sound area has various offshore islands that have excellent photographic opportunities. I conduct personalized tours to all these, please contact me if interested. Spring and summer are the best times.
Directions: There are various ways to reach this area. I will highlight the easiest from the Tampa Airport area.
Take Route 60 / Courtney Campbell Causeway towards Clearwater, west. After exiting the causeway take a right on to US 19 heading north. Continue north until you see signs for Rt 586, also know as Curlew Road. Head west on Rt 586, it will head right into the causeway and become Causeway Blvd.
