Fort Desoto - North Beach Lagoon Area
City: St. Petersburg
GPS: N27 38.574 W82 44.525
The Lagoon area of North Beach is found at the very far end of the parking lot for North Beach. If you park in this area and look North West you will see a small wooden foot bridge which will take you over a small creek and into this area.
This are can be productive with various lenses in both the morning and afternoon. Note that in the very early morning the sun must first clear the trees so you may want to do some sunrise shots at the East Beach Turn-a-round.
The species of birds found in this area will vary from day to day and the time of year but most every wader, shorebirds, and raptor that frequents the park can be found in this area at some point. This are is seems to be least productive in the mornings where there is a low tide. When there is a low tide you can normally find some extremely tame Yellow-Crowned Night Herons (both adult and juveniles) in the salt flat areas around the foot bridge and along the creek the bridge crosses.
You should expect to wade and get dirty in this area of the park. Note that the salt flat mud can be quite slippery and there can be some soft areas.
